Yin Yoga is a complementary yoga practice to the more dynamic, yang-based yoga styles popular today. Yin postures (mainly floor-based asanas) are held passively for several minutes in order to promote a controlled and positive ‘stress’ on the deep layers of connective tissue. Thus, the connective tissue is ‘exercised’ and stimulated so it can regrow and strengthen. This may also cause the joint to produce synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint.
The benefits of practicing Yin Yoga may include the following. Physically, Yin Yoga restores and maintains the natural mobility of the joints. Further, since the Yin Yoga practice emphasizes stillness, this invokes a meditative experience, thus quieting and nourishing the mind.
